About us

Basing our concept on “one with the nature,” we spend the entire year planting, growing, nurturing, harvesting, and producing each and every product by hand. Historically and universally utilized for over 240 unique uses ranging from daily products to musical instruments, the gourds have seen better days in terms of use – thanks to the requisition of plastic materials today. The gourd seeds, however, have found their ways to us through thousands and thousands of years of challenges and trials. Hoping to resurrect them in a truly unique manner for the modern-day society, we continue to produce our products while actively engaging in various local programs promoting craftsmanship, creative arts, as well as practical collaborations. Observing how the plants grow in your own eyes may be one of the most practical ways to recognize how one ought to exist in the natural environment and the universality of life itself. Kalavinka hopes to awaken new ideas for the future as we continue to provide our customers with a peaceful ambience in a form of our products.

Said to be the primeval tools of the humankind, the gourds presumably are the world’s oldest domesticated plants. In the ancient times, they were used as water bottles, making it possible for the earliest human migrations to take place out of Africa. Gourds are often mentioned in various mythologies throughout the world and are of something beyond just a strand of plants. Researchers, for instance, have discovered remains of a gourd from a mound of shells from approximately 9,000 years ago here in Japan.

Kalavinka is a mythical bird painted in the Taima Mandala. Beautiful sounding, the Kalavinka are said to start chirping while in shells. The term for this feathered creature was then said to have been used as a nickname for geishas and beautiful singers in Japan. We chose it as our brand name 10 years ago as we began our production of gourd speakers in Itoshima with hopes of delivering beautiful sounds of music to our customers.
